Brooklyn Museum visit

  1. Go to the American Art department on the 5th floor. Pay special attention to the first room by the elevators before you even enter the exhibition– how was the collection organized? What strategies does the museum use to center the voices of the community?
  2. In the exhibition itself, spend time looking at the wall labels where the museum discusses their own acquisition practices. I have attached a photo of one of the labels as an example. What do you make of this in relation to the discussion we had about repatriation of artefacts?
  3. Do some close looking and visual analysis of the landscape paintings in the third room. We will be discussing these paintings in a later lecture– but I would like you to experience these in person because of the intricate details that aren’t effectively captured digitally. I have attached an example of one of the oil paintings that you can see in the museum.
  4. Visit the Visible Storage Room further into the exhibition. Think about the methods of museum displays. How does the experience of seeing objects in storage differ from how they are displayed in the galleries?
  5. Finally, complete this Scavenger Hunt to explore the other sections of the museum on your own: Brooklyn Museum worksheet
